Translation of Ayat al Kursi

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.

• It protects against a variety of threats. Ayat al Kursi is a natural remedy for a variety of ailments and diseases. It serves as a protector for those who are afraid. This is the most powerful verse that explains why we should put our faith in Allah.
• Surah Al-Baqarah contains the Ayat al Kursi (verse 255). This is the most important verse in the Qur'an. According to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The meaning of Ayat al Kursi can be invoked from these different prophetic narratives:

The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

"Whoever recites the first 4 verses of Surah al Baqarah, then Ayat al Kursi and finally the last 3 verses of Surah al Baqarah will not be inflicted with any kind of hardship in his wealth or himself, Shaytan will not approach him and he will not forget the Quran."

Narrated by Abu Umaamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلمُ) said:

"Whoever reads "Ayat al Kursi" after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death (i.e. he is still alive)."

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"The leader of the Ayahs of Quran Kareem is Ayat al Kursi."

Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"No matter whether you are in the air or on earth, in the Jannat or the Jahannam, Allah the Exalted has created nothing higher than Ayat al Kursi".

Hazrat Askee Baqri reported that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to the abode of the Muhajireen when a person asked, "In the Quran Kareem, what is the highest Ayat?" Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) repeated:

"Ayat al Kursi."

The benefits of reciting Ayat al Kursi

The virtues and benefits of reciting Ayat al Kursi are as follows:

• Allah Almighty said to Hazrat Musa (A.S):

"If one recites Ayat al Kursi after every namaz, the Almighty will make his heart a grateful one (Shakireen), give him a reward of the Prophets, and his deeds will be like those of the truthful (Siddiqeen) and nothing but death will prevent him from going to Paradise."

• If you recite Ayat al Kursi, Allah will send 70,000 angels o surround you and protect you from all dangerous sides when you leave your house.
• If you pray it every time you enter your house, it will keep poverty away from you and Allah will continue to provide you abundantly.
• When you are alone at home, reciting Ayat al Kursi and asking Allah to help you will help you stay calm. Your fear disappears.
• If you recite Ayat al Kursi after performing Wudu, then it will increase your ajar by 70 times in the ranks of Allah.
• If you recite Ayat al Kursi before sleeping, an angel will be appointed to protect you throughout the night.
• After any Salah Fardh (obligatory), if it is prayed, then the only thing that prevents you from entering paradise is death.
• If one prays Ayat al Kursi, it will help to increase his memory and strengthen it if it is weak.
• Our Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

"These things increase memory; sweets, meat from an animal near the neck, Adas (lentils), cold bread and reciting Ayat al Kursi."

• When we recite Ayat al Kursi and send it to the souls who have passed away as Hadiya, then it gives them light (Noor) in their graves.
• If you recite Ayat al Kursi once before leaving home, the Almighty Allah will send a group of angels to protect you. If you do it twice, two groups of angels will be assigned to it. Finally, when it is recited three times, Allah tells the Angels not to worry because the Almighty himself will take care of the person (Subhan Allah).

The power of Ayat al Kursi

Ayat al Kursi is a way to enter Paradise

In a narration from Abu Umaamah, the Holy Prophet (saw) is quoted as saying, "Whoever recites ayat al kursiy immediately after every prescribed prayer, there will be nothing that stands between him and his entry into Paradise except death."

Imagine if all you had to do to gain paradise was to recite ayat al kursi after every obligatory salah? Wouldn't that motivate you to remember to recite the verse after every prayer? There are many ways to enter paradise and although the most important factor in entering paradise is the mercy of Allah (swt), it is a great advantage to recite ayat al Kursi and we should take advantage of it.

Ayat al Kursi as a means of protection

One of the most popular benefits of ayat al Kursi is in terms of protection from evil. In a hadith, the Holy Prophet (saw) is reported to have said that "Whoever recites Ha Mim Al-Mu'min - until - to Him is the return (40:1-3) and Ayat al Kursi when he gets up in the morning, he will be protected by them until the evening. And whoever recites them when he reaches the evening, he will be protected by them until the morning. "(Jami at-Tirmidhi)

Think of it as a twenty-four hour protection from evil when you recite ayat al Kursi once in the morning and evening. We literally put our protection in the hands of our creator by using the greatest verse of the Holy Quran.

In another narration, the Holy Prophet mentioned that whoever recites Surah ul Baqara, shaytan will not be able to enter the person's house. This is the surah that contains the ayat al Kursi, and because of its length and the power of the ayat al Kursi, many people interpret this to mean that reciting the ayat al Kursi prevents shaytan from entering the house.

As a cure for the evil eye

In the practice of "ruqya" (treatment of a person afflicted with the evil eye, magic or possessed by a jinn), one of the verses that it is recommended to recite for the afflicted person is ayat al Kursi.

During the lifetime of the Holy Prophet (saw), it was said that a Bedouin man came to the Prophet (saw) to complain about his brother who had a mental disorder. Part of the verses that the Prophet (saw) recited for the brother was ayat al Kursi, and by the mercy of Allah (swt), the man was cured. It should be noted here that mental derangement is not the same as mental health problems that require medical treatment.

In some cultures, it is common for people to use various superstitious objects to protect themselves from evil. But as Muslims, we know that our protection comes only from Allah (swt) and that is why it is important for us to make ayat al Kursi our weapon of protection against shaytan and all forms of evil.

What does the word "Throne" mean in Ayat al Kursi?

Ayat al Kursi was named after the word Kursi that appears in it. This raises the question of what exactly the word Kursi refers to.

Imam Tabari writes that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the students of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had a difference of opinion regarding the meaning of the word Kursi, which appears in this verse. Some scholars are of the opinion that no one knows the true meaning of this word except Allah the Most High. Other scholars say that the word Kursi in this verse refers to the knowledge of Allah the Most High, which means that His knowledge encompasses everything in the heavens and the earth. Some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their students (may Allah be pleased with them) held the opinion that the word Kursi refers to the Throne of Allah the Most High. This is because another name for the throne is Kursi. They also held that the Throne of Allah the Most High includes the heavens and the earth.

Hafiz Ibn Kathir writes that 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the meaning of the word Kursi in this verse is the knowledge of Allah the Most High, and that His knowledge encompasses the earth. Another opinion is that Kursi is a creation of Allah the Most High whose magnitude makes the magnitude of the heavens and the earth insignificant. Another opinion is that due to the praise of the Throne to Allah the Most High, it emits a "squeaky" sound. This hadith has been recorded in many books, but in the chain of narrators, one narrator is unknown and therefore this narration cannot be authentic.

[Tafsir Ibn Kathir: under Ayat al Kursi, Hafiz Ibn Kathir].

Qadi Shawkani writes that the hadith, which mentions the squeaking of the Throne, contains in its chain of transmission a narrator called 'Abdullah bin Khalifah. He is unknown, and did not hear anything from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The chain of narration does not even go back to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The hadith, which mentions a "Place of rest for both feet", contains a narrator called al-Hakam al-Kufi, in its chain of transmission, which has been rejected (by the scholars of hadith).

Allamah al-Allusi al-Hanafi writes that no one knows the true meaning of the word Kursi in this verse except Allah the Most High. Questions like this are known as mutashabihat.

Allah the Most High says in Ayat al Kursi that no one can intercede on the Day of Judgment unless He Himself has given permission to do so. Intercession means to plead for someone. On the Day of Judgment, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) will intercede for the Muslims. As a result of the Prophet's (PBUH) supplication (Du'a) to Allah the Most High, He will show them mercy and admit them to Paradise, in sha Allah. In the same way, Allah the Most High will accept the intercession of the pious and righteous Muslims. This intercession will only be accepted for Muslims, not for disbelievers. Intercession therefore means that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) and the righteous Muslims supplicate Allah the Most High on behalf of another person.

It is wrong to think that intercession means that Allah the Most High is forced to forgive someone whom Allah the Most High did not wish to forgive. It implies that the will of Allah the Most High can be overcome by the will of any of His creations. This is pure disbelief. The correct Islamic belief is that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) loves the Muslim Ummah, so Allah the Most High, out of love for the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), will not let his supplication go unanswered, when he makes supplications for the Muslim Ummah.

The benefits of Ayat al-Kursi are manifold and it is therefore obvious that the verse of the throne is presented as the most immense in the Holy Quran. Thus, this verse clearly tells us:

• The Oneness of Allâh in His Divinity
• The oneness of Allâh in his lordship
• The uniqueness of Allâh in His names and attributes
• The total and comprehensive knowledge of Allâh
• The extent of His omnipotence
• The nobility of His glory
• The magnificence of His transcendence
• His sovereign elevation above all things

Ayat Al Kursi uniquely describes the praise of Allah Almighty. It is mentioned in Ayatul Kursi that everything in the sky and the universe belongs to Allah. He sees and hears. Without His permission, no one can speak. He is the one who has the power in its entirety. Whatever is in the hearts, He also knows it. He is the one and only.

Ayat Al Kursi clearly defines the magnificence, power, authority and glory of Allah. Its importance and benefits are explained above. Hazrat Ibn Masood (R.A) said that no space in the sky or on earth is higher than Ayatul Kursi. Ayat Al Kursi contains a total of 50 words. Try to memorize these powerful verses. It is clearly stated in Ayatul Kursi that everything in heaven and earth belongs to Allah Almighty.
